Scanning for Liver Disorders with Diagnostic Imaging

Board-certified radiologist Jim Gray, MD, possesses more than a decade of clinical experience diagnosing tissue and organ conditions using imaging technology. As a member of the West Florida Radiology medical team, Jim Gray, MD, performs diagnostic scans for diseases such as cancer, vascular conditions, and liver disorders.

In order to view changes in the liver resulting from chronic conditions such as cirrhosis or advanced hepatitis, physicians may use non-invasive imaging equipment such as MRIs, cat scans, or ultrasounds. Cat scans combine the imaging power of computer imaging and x-rays to view deeper organ tissues that are not visible on a traditional x-ray. Tumors, internal bleeding, or other injuries of the liver can be discovered using this type of scan.

Ultrasounds can also be used to diagnose larger tumors caused by liver cancer. Other chronic illnesses, such as liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, can be assessed by measuring scar tissue levels that appear on an MRI or ultrasound. MRIs are also utilized for investigating blood vessel blockages that may lead to an enlarged liver or other vascular problems.
